February Birthstone: Amethyst
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and can be found in a spectrum of shades from pale lilac to deep purple. Most commonly known in this deeper shade, until the 19th century amethyst was as costly as rubies and sapphires and was loved by royalty as well as being worn by bishops. Another member of the quartz family, prasiolite, is also called green amethyst, giving you wider choice if you are looking for jewellery featuring the February birthstone, but would like to explore a wider choice of colour.
